She leaves for work
Early in the morning
But lately, with some foreboding
Her job is to care
For us and for strangers
Who arrive in large numbers
So I shudder
When the door shutters
Behind her
As she goes off on her own
To brave the always unknown
She is not alone
In her fear
To fight without the tools
And the static rules
To get the job done
Every day she’s gone
I want her right back
But I fight back
The tears
The fears
The worry
That in her duty
To her community
To her country
Her family
Might lose her permanently.
